It is the ultimate predator, nature’s most efficient killing machine which can hunt and kill its prey with remarkable ease.

These shots capture the splendour and horror of a two ton great white shark weighing leaping 10ft from the water as it closes inevitably on its victim.

After reaching speeds of up to 35mph on its ascent from the depths, the shark uses serried ranks of razor-sharp teeth to tear into the seal.

The wildlife photographer Chris Fellows spends over half of each year waiting off the coast of South Africa to capture the sharks at their grisly work.

These dramatic pictures, taken near Seal Island, in False Bay, are part of a decade-long campaign to promote positive awareness of great white sharks, which are classed as “endangered” largely due to being hunted by man.

On occasion the photography team used an artificial lure to attract the sharks before snapping them in action with the seals.

“The sharks feed on young seals when they are attempting to return to Seal Island after a few days out feeding,” Mr Fellows said. “The sharks will bite the seal, typically in half in the first go, and then come round and pick the other half up. It is all on the surface and it happens in a few minutes.”

The average great white in the waters around Seal Island measures between 12-16ft, with the biggest being a near 20-feet long giant spotted in 1997.

Mr Fellows added: “When children see a shark eat a seal they feel sorry for the seal, but it’s like a lion catching a zebra - it’s a natural phenomenon.

“To see a perfectly streamlined great white slowly cruising in clear water with shafts of light bouncing off its back is like watching a sports car effortlessly cruise past you on the freeway. It is just one of those moments that makes you appreciate a beautiful creation.”

i loooooooooove great white sharks. i think they’re misunderstood. they’re such beautiful creatures, but as most animals are, they are dangerous and people need to respect that. I wish people would get over their fear and appreciate what they really are. [:

wow great whites are beautiful deadly animals and like any living being they do what they have to to survive.they seen agile and focused it’s amazing to see them in they’re predatory state i am in awe and i have nothing but respect for them.because of the natural instinct to prey that’s why they’ve survived millions of years and hopefully will survive millions more:}

These pictures are simply amazing!!!!! Sharks are such beautiful, amazing stupendous creatures and they deserve respect. I wish that animals didn’t have to kill animals to survive, but its a part of life. People are sharks biggest fear and predator and people don’t need sharks to survive. If people absolutely needed sharks in order to survive, my opinion would be different. I respect sharks, I’m looking forward to diving with them next year and their my favorite animal. :)

It is sad to see the seals be eaten alive,but thats the way life is. The shark is doing what every living thing does. EATING! The photographs are amazing! I think my favorite pictures of sharks are of them jumping out of the water! The shape and everything is so amazing! I love it! My compliments to the photogrophers!!!
